Guide to conference and event survey questions

Event survey questions are a great way to gather feedback and data from attendees, vendors, speakers and volunteers. It’s important to gather as much data as possible as experiences differ. The good news is by using digital surveys via your event app or online, it’s much easier to evaluate data and create reports.

The following guide to event survey questions will give you examples to pose to your attendees, exhibitors, sponsors and volunteers. We have also included some helpful tips on distribution and how to get high response rates.

Types of questions

Open-ended questions
This type of question allows the person to give you a longer answer and is a good opportunity to open up the conversation and get a meaningful response

Closed-ended questions
Some questions only require a one-word answer like yes or no. Use them to find out quick bits of data and then use later segment data based on the response.

Rating questions
Star rating answers are a quick way to gauge a person’s opinion. These questions are useful to include in sessions.

Multiple-choice questions
Multiple choice questions are great of analysing post-event feedback. Use them to rate favourite exhibitors or sessions.

Demographic questions
Optionally work demographics into the equation by asking questions in your survey or collecting relevant info on attendees through registration to compare results by demographics.

Maximise responses

Segment questions based on profile

When preparing event surveys it’s best to keep the questions relevant to the person answering. Consider having specific questions for each type of respondent e.g attendee, exhibitor, sponsor, speaker or event staff.

The results will be much more valuable and you will likely get a higher response rate.

If using your event app to gather feedback utilise smart content to automatically direct the correct questions or form to the relevant profile type.

Offer an incentive or prize

This doesn’t really need an explanation….the better the prize the more responses you will get! If you don’t have a budget to buy a prize, give a sponsored prize or an event ticket for next year.

Shorten the survey

If you have a large number of questions or the event is run over multiple days, consider having a short survey for each day. Use pulse surveys which are typically short and star rating. Include feedback for specific sessions in-line in the event app or on tablets as attendees exit the room.

Distribution

Once you have your questions ready to go, segmented for each audience you can load them into your event app or online survey platform. Use a combination of the following distribution options to notify attendees and request their feedback.

Don’t forget to include fields that are required and not required, respondent details (especially if you intend to award a prize) and ability to submit anonymously.

  • Event app push notifications
  • Email or SMS
  • Social media
  • Event website
  • Load onto tablets at the venue

Analysing feedback

Use the feedback to make improvements and to promote upcoming events. Easily grab average star ratings to announce the most successful features of your event. Even pull out some great testimonials (with permission of course).

Happy surveying!
